The Adelaide Football Club is committed to engaging and empowering Indigenous youth through the promotion of positive health and wellbeing outcomes. Through the delivery of specific programs, the Club encourages and supports young Indigenous Australians in making positive changes to their lives and developing the skills to make positive decisions on their future.
The McLeod Centre of Excellence, led by Club legend Andrew McLeod and wife Rachael, delivers programs to meet student needs through each stage of their high school education. Our dedicated and passionate team of professionals, work closely with the students, families and schools on a regular basis to inspire, motivate, and empower youth to achieve their potential.
Carey Training have partnered with The McLeod Centre of Excellence and Adelaide Football Club to provide nationally accredited training to young Indigenous school students, and help assist them with gaining meaningful employment opportunities.
Indigenous Youth Leadership Program:
The Indigenous Youth Leadership Program supports students in year 10 with improved school attendance, SACE completion, leadership development, employment opportunities and future pathways. The IYL Program, incorporates a Certificate II in Business, specialist guest speakers, and other educational opportunities in leadership, mentoring, identity, sport and wellbeing. Most importantly, the Business Certificate (a nationally recognised qualification), facilitates SACE completion by providing students with up to 25% of their SACE requirements. In 2017, high schools participating in the IYL Program include: Woodville, Windsor Gardens, Modbury, Westminster, Victor Harbour, Salisbury and St Michael’s College.
Future Leaders Program:
The Future Leaders Program provides continued mentoring and educational support to students in years 11 and 12 upon completion of the Indigenous Youth Leadership Program. Future Leader students are provided with the opportunity to further their studies by completing a Certificate III in Business, thereby receiving further credits towards their South Australian Certificate of Education. Completing the Certificate III in Business provides FL students with further credits of up to 30% of their SACE requirements. The Future Leaders Program, in partnership with Carey Training, provides students with weekly educational support, promotes employment opportunities and pathways, and facilitates leadership skill development as students act as peer mentors for the next generation of IYL students.
Carey Training CEO Paul Brock says that our organisation is very pleased to be working closely with the McLeod Centre of Excellence and the Adelaide Football Club in the delivery of these programs. Importantly, the success to date has seen very good results including the development of confidence, individual skills, team dynamics and general personal growth in all Indigenous students who have participated, which we know will have a positive impact on their lives in general and their ability to pursue and retain preferred career paths.
